Atlas Donation Elevates University of Alaska Anchorage Aviation Program  

Michael Steen visits UAA’s Aviation Technology Center and announces that Atlas Air will award $50,000 in scholarships to the University of Alaska Anchorage.

During Michael Steen’s recent trip to ANC, he visited the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), which boasts a top-tier aviation program with four specialized tracks – Air Traffic Control, Aviation Management, Aviation Maintenance and Professional Piloting.

While there, Michael announced that Atlas’ would be donating $50,000 in scholarships to the University to help offset education costs for students pursuing careers in the aviation industry. The needs-based scholarships award will include four $5,000 scholarships for students pursuing careers as Aviation Maintenance Technicians and three $10,000 scholarships for those aspiring to become pilots.

Michael made the announcement while meeting with aviation maintenance technician and professional pilot students in the class “Basic Aerodynamics,” taught by Professor Brian Watkins.

Said Michael, “This donation to UAA underscores our Company’s dedication to contributing to the vibrant future of aviation in Alaska. We are excited to partner with the University of Alaska Anchorage to develop future aviation leaders.”

Michael was accompanied on his visit to UAA by Atlas team members including Camille Fleenor, Vice President, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Tyler Cresswell, Chief Regional Pilot, Debbie Coffey, Chief Communications Leader and Leisa Spears Snyder, Director of Workforce Development, Human Resources. They were welcomed to campus by Sean Parnell, UAA Chancellor, Ryan Buchholdt, Vice Chancellor, Tanya Point, Executive Director, Advancement and Jennifer Motes, Chief Strategic Gifts Officer where they received an introduction to the school from Dr. Terry Nelson, Dean, College of Business & Public Policy.

The Atlas group had the opportunity to tour of the UAA Aviation Building led by Fred Dyen, Assistant Dean, UAA Aviation Technology.

Anchorage plays a significant role in Atlas operations. Annually Atlas departures at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) have grown to more than 7,000 in 2023, supported by over 600 Alaska-based employees who live and work in Anchorage and the surrounding communities. Anchorage’s proximity, within 9.5 hours by plane of 90% of the industrial world, positions it as a vital hub for global commerce, training and talent development.
